Overview of Arabuko Sokoke National Park 

The Arabuko Sokoke National Park is part of the ArabukoSokoke Forest which is a protected forest reserve at the coastal side of Kenya. The park is found at the North West part of the ArabukoSokoke forest. The park was gazetted in 1991. Only 50% of the park lies outside the national reserve boundary with the rest straddling the reserve.

Endemic Mammals

The Arabuko Sokoke National Park is home to many endemic mammals and over 600 plant species. Such mammals include; golden rumpled elephant shrew adheres duiker and Sokoke bush tailed mongoose. These animals can be observed while forest walking or on forest drives.

Endemic Bird Species

Some of the endemic bird species found in the park include Sokoke Pipit, Amani Sunbird, Sokoke scops owl, east coast akalat, spotted ground thrush among others. The best bird watching time to sight these bird species is from dawn to about 9:00 am.


In addition to the endemic species of birds and mammals, the park is also home to baboons, monkeys, savannah elephants, Sokokes and African civets. It is also home to many diverse amphibians and butterflies.

How to Get There

By Road: The park is located 110 km north of the coastal town of Mombasa between Kilifi and Malindi towns. It is accessible through a tarmac road which is 75 km from Mombasa. It is also accessible from Malindi town which is 18km from the park. One can use taxis or public service vehicles from both the towns.

By Air: The nearest airstrips near the park are at Mombasa and Malindi. One can alight at any of these airstrips and access the park via road.
